PS.? Yes, I know the ?PS? usually comes at the end, but as I was writing out this post it hit me how overwhelming getting started in your own home based business can be?and how overwhelming this list can be, especially for someone wishing to start a work from home business.? It can also be incredibly fun and exciting, too.? Matter of fact, it should be!
I help entrepreneurs and mompreneurs get started in their own business and know that the steps outlined below are definitely overkill for the business I help them with.? But in other businesses, this is just the tip of the iceberg.? Either way, it?s a good list to review as you are getting? your business set up.
On your mark, get set, Go!
1) Find The Perfect URL
It seems like coming up with a business name is easy, but in this day and age, you want to make sure you have a URL.? Finding one that is available is a challenge.? You can head over to GoDaddy or Word Press and look for names.? Both companies offer alternative names if a URL is not available.? Use your creativity!
2)? Establish Your Company Name
Now that you have your URL, come up with your company name.? In 2013 it seems like making up a totally new word works for Internet based companies.? Creativity will be important.? Be sure to search the web for like business names to see if you are using a business name or phrase that?s been trade marked.
3) Do The Not-So-Fun Legal Work
Depending on what your business is, you may or may not need invest heavily in becoming incorporated.? I have two businesses and with one of them it cost me a lawyer to incorporate our LLC because of the partnerships that were involved.? With my Rodan and Fields business, I have not created an official corporation.? For a lot of mompreneurs and work from home entrepreneurs, you may not need to pay heavily for legal fees. ? You will know the nature of your business and will know what?s needed for your business. This may be a good place to make a legal disclaimer that I?m not providing legal advice.
4) Open A Bank Account
Again, depending on what your business is, you may or may not need a separate business account.? But if you only have one bank account, plan ahead to keep impeccable financial records.? Business bank accounts seem more expensive at first, but once I reached a certain balance level, the fees were dropped from my account.? Ask other business owners what they like and don?t like from their bank and seek out a bank that is excited to work with you and your new business.? The tellers and officers and my bank are so friendly, helpful and encouraging ? they make working with them easy!
5)? Set Up A Working Business Plan
It?s a road map really and is a must for any business.? You want to know where to go and how you?re going to get there.? You need to set a budget and establish sales goals.? You need to know how you?re going to get? to your goals and how you?re going to succeed.? This is a plan, meaning it needs to be reviewed, improved, analyzed, updated, worked and followed.? Some would say this step needs to happen before #1. I think it happens before, during and along the way.? You have to have a plan and you have to work it.? Often, home based businesses are not treated like a real business ? that?s a huge mistake.? Work it, and work it hard.
6) Find A Graphic Design Artist You Connect With
Hire a graphic design artist for logo and branding.? Find one you can talk with, one who understands who you are working with, one who has a portfolio with a look that you like.? A good graphic design artist will ask lots of questions about who you want to appeal to and how you?re reaching out to your audience.? And yes, I do realize I need a good graphic design artist of do a make over on this page.? But I am a prime example ? For one business I used a professional and it shows.? In one, I have done it all myself?and it shows.? Great graphics and branding are so important, even for home based businesses.
7)? Find A Web Designer
We design is a science of its own.? You may be able to run a blog for day to day changes and updates, but look to a professional web designer to get it all set up.? These designers are worth their weight in gold if you find the right one.? And they can cost you your weight in gold if you don?t hire the right one.? Get a mock up of what their designing.? Often times a web designer will work with their own graphic design artist, so you may be able to combine #6 and #7.
8)? Set Up Your Social Networks
Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest ? those are the big ones for me.? I do use Google + as well, but mostly because it has some SEO value.? I?m always impressed when I see a company who is utilizing it well and has hundreds of connections.? Social Media is huge in today?s business environment ? jump on board and connect with people.
9)? Find A Hosting Company
Again, this is going to depend on your business and what you utilize your website for.? I utilized a Word Press hosted website for one company and for my other company we utilize a server farm because of the high amount of traffic and the speed and utilities that is needed.
10)? Work Your Plan
You have things in place, now it?s time to bring in the customers!? Get out there and make it happen!? The fun thing about a work from home business is that it?s up to you.? It?s also the scary part.? But like the old saying goes, ?if you want something done right you have to do it yourself.? Have fun succeeding!
