'Arrested Development' getting 14 new episodes

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Bluth family is finally back in May, six years after Fox canceled "Arrested Development." Netflix made the announcement Wednesday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, but did not reveal a specific premiere date.

But that wasn't the only news.

Star Jason Bateman, who plays Michael Bluth, tweeted in 2011 that there would be 10 new episodes, but it turns out that's not the case. There will actually be 14, Netflix announced. The episodes will be available for all Netflix subscribers to stream.

"We always knew there were going to be 14 (episodes)," creator Mitch Hurwitz told reporters. "The idea was: Let?s say there?s 10, and then the fans will be so happy when we say there?s even more!"

Details of the plot were not revealed.

"If one was to be fair to these episodes, you cannot and should not hopefully compare them to what was the series, where you had 22 minutes and you had all the characters in every single episode," Bateman said. "This is something that is completely different on purpose creatively for the format that Netflix affords us."

All 14 episodes -- each just under half an hour -- will be available on Netflix at the same time, but Hurwitz said there is a certain order fans should watch them in.?

"There is absolutely an order we have put together to put together the maximum number of surprises," Hurwitz said. He also noted that each episode is dedicated to a different character's point of view. Star Portia de Rossi, who plays Lindsay Bluth Funke, added that "action happens simultaneously for the characters."

"We wanted originally to find a way to jump from one story to another, almost a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' kind of thing," Hurwitz explained. "And all of that conspired to just make this one giant 'Arrested Development,' one giant 700-minute 'Arrested Development' ... which is simply just the first act of what we hope to continue and complete in a movie."
