Lincoln Mitchell: The Republican Party's Problem is not Going to be Easy to Fix

President Barack Obama's reelection on Tuesday was a victory for the new America and its demographics. Remarkably, according to CNN exit polls, Obama lost the white vote by 20%, including the white female vote by 14%. These numbers somewhat overstate Obama's strength among whites because those Jewish and GLBT voters who are also white are included in this sample. If they are excluded, than the numbers rise to something like 23% and 17%. Despite this, Obama won a resounding electoral college victory while winning a clear majority of the popular vote.

Republicans are, unsurprisingly, trying to figure out who to blame and what to do next. Obama's victory can be understood as a victory of the future over the past, suggesting his campaign slogan "Forward" was both appropriate and effective. The Republican problem is obvious, they are fighting a Sisyphean demographic battle, not just because of changing demographics but because of the complete collapse of support for the Republican Party among voters who are not white, straight and Christian. At first glance, it seems that party that wins 59% of the white vote, even in today's America should win a national election handily. However, Romney did not only lose among African American, Latino, Asian, LGBT, Jewish and Muslim voters, but he lost all of these groups by margins of more than 2-1. In some cases, the margin was significantly larger than that. Additionally, Romney's support from white voters was skewed towards older voters as, among whites under 30, Romney's margin was only six points.

The Republican Party is not, however, on the verge of collapse. The legal, financial, regulatory and historical factors which reinforce our two party system are too strong. The Party is, however and inevitably, going to change. There are two major reasons why the Republican Party appeals to such a narrow and conservative slice of America. The first is their radical positions on social issues. This should be obvious to anybody who pays attention to politics. Republican positions on abortion, contraception, marriage equality and the role of Christianity in every day civic and political life makes the party unpalatable to millions of voters, particularly those who are young, unmarried, LGBT or not Christian. Smart Republicans are beginning to recognize this, although strategies about how to address this will not come easily to a party whose primary electorate appears to be heavily influenced by radical social conservatives.

The second reason is that the Republican economic program makes it very hard to appeal to voters who are neither wealthy or socially conservative. This is a major contributor to the persistent Republican problems winning votes of Latinos and African Americans. While the Republican position on reaching out to African American voters is essentially to try to prevent them from voting, the Party periodically makes efforts to win Latino votes. We will undoubtedly see more of these efforts in the next months and years. These efforts are unlikely to be successful unless economic issues are addressed.

Substantive efforts by the Republican Party to increase Latino support are likely to consist largely of immigration reform. The Party will also seek to put a Latino on their national ticket in 2016. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), for example, has already emerged as an early frontrunner for the 2016 nomination. Rubio would obviously be a big help in Florida, but is unlikely to move enough Mexican Americans in the Southwest back to the Republican Party to put states like New Mexico or Nevada back in play. Latinos in these states, many of whom are middle or lower income, voted for Obama for economic reasons, not, as the Rubio strategy suggests, for reasons of identity

Republican economic policies have always favored the wealthy, but this year was far more extreme and less subtle. Thus, the ticket looked like the spirit of Montgomery Burns and Ayn Rand had been placed inside the bodies of two generic politicians from central casting. There was no attempt to hide or change policies that were not just conservative but explicitly focused redistributing wealth upwards. CEOs spoke unabashedly about coercing workers to vote Republican; operatives all but boasted about efforts to limit the franchise of poor people; moderate social programs were implausibly, and laughingly, described as socialism; and in a time of economic suffering the vibe given off from the Party made Marie Antoinette seem comparatively sensitive to the plight of the needy.

Changing these policies and the rhetoric around them will do more to bring back young and Latino voters than nominating Marco Rubio or pushing through immigration reform will. This will also be extremely difficult as it means changing the core message of the Republican Party, but failing to do it keeps the Party on the treadmill of fighting against big picture demographic forces. On social issues, the best advice for the Republican Party is probably just to stop talking about them so much, but on economic issues, the Party needs to change its message. This will not occur easily, but the relevancy and future of the Republican Party, lies in the balance.

Stanford opens 2-stroke lead in Mexico

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) ? Angela Stanford shot a 5-under 67 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead over Inbee Park after the second round of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

The winner of the inaugural tournament in 2008, Stanford had an 11-under 133 total at Guadalajara Country Club. The Texan won the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore in February for her fifth LPGA Tour victory.

"I told somebody just earlier that Lorena has done so much for golf, especially in Mexico, I would be extremely honored to win her tournament twice," Stanford said. "Because I do have so much respect for her and respect for what she's done with the game. I think it'd be pretty cool to have your name on her trophy twice."

Stanford had six birdies ? four in a row on Nos. 7-10 ? and one bogey. She hit 12 of 14 fairways and 16 of the 18 greens in regulation.

"I've said all along I love the golf course," Stanford said. "I think anytime you feel extremely comfortable on the golf course, you tend to relax."

Stanford is a fan favorite at the end, as evidenced by the "Angie! Angie!" chants as she proceed down a long line of fans waiting for her autograph.

"It's kind of fun," Stanford said. "I think this week is so much fun because it's so relaxed, and it's so laid back. Seems like, when things like that happen, it means that the fans are having fun. So that's good."

Park, from South Korea, had a 68. She has two victories this year and leads the money list.

"I love the people here and especially playing in Lorena's event, it is a big honor," Park said. Especially playing in the same golf tournament with Lorena. I feel very honored and hopefully someday I'll be like her."

Cristie Kerr was third at 8 under after a 69. She's winless since the 2010 LPGA State Farm Classic.

"I just have to not get too high when good things happen and not get too low when you have to keep moving on," Kerr said." I just have to keep doing that. It's going to happen again, it's just a matter of when."

Second-ranked Stacy Lewis, coming off her tour-leading fourth victory of the season Sunday in Japan, was 7 under along with So Yeon Ryu and Candie Kung. Lewis and Ryu shot 70, and Kung had a 71.

Lewis has a 58-point lead over Park with two events left in the player of the year points race, putting her in position to become the first American to win the award since Beth Daniel in 1994.

"I mean, after last week, I kind of looked at it, and then, I mean, it's really almost impossible to catch Stacy," Park said. "I play with Stacy the last two days and she was playing really great. I think it's almost impossible for the Player of the Year. I'll just give my best and just see what happens. I mean, Stacy's playing great, too so, I think it's not going to be easy."

Michelle Wie, tied for the first-round lead with Stanford and Kung after a 66, had a 75 to drop into a tie for 12th at 3 under. Wie won the 2010 tournament.

Top-ranked Yani Tseng also was 3 under after a 71.

Ochoa was 1 under after a 72. The Mexican star won 27 LPGA Tour titles before retiring at age 28 in 2010. She missed the event last year before the birth of son Pedro in December.

Suzann Pettersen, coming off consecutive victories in South Korea and Taiwan, was even par after a 74.

Disabled Veterans National Foundation Calls for Increased Attention to Meeting the Needs of Women Veterans

DVNF urges Congress to increase the attention given to Social, Economic and Health issues faced by our returning US female military veterans

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 08, 2012

The Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF), founded by women veterans to change the lives of soldiers returning home with emotional and physical wounds, is urging Congress and the nation to increase the attention given to issues faced by women veterans in light of statistics showing their needs for housing, health care and jobs are not being adequately met.

While overall veteran employment shows a slight improvement, nearly one in five women who served in Afghanistan or Iraq are without adequately paying jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of women requesting medical services at VA health care facilities has doubled from 2000 to 2011, and female veterans are four times more likely to be homeless compared to both their female civilian and male veteran counterparts.

?The difficulties faced by women veterans are complex and increasing,? said Precilla Wilkewitz, President of the DVNF. ?Our organization and many others have been committed to helping women veterans, but our country needs to make their issues a higher priority. While female veterans are due the same benefits as male veterans, they have unique problems and needs, particularly in the areas of health care and housing. Additionally, many women veterans are single mothers, and we need to be concerned about them because their children are our country?s future.?

As the U.S. troop withdrawal in Afghanistan continues, unemployment for post-9/11 female veterans surged to 19.9 percent in September, compared to 12.1 percent in August. More women than ever are enlisted in the armed services, so more women veterans are returning to civilian life, comprising about 15 percent of all homecoming veterans.

"Women veterans have issues that are not faced by male veterans", said Wilkewitz, "including trauma from sexual assault during their military service, lower paying jobs, unique health and mental health issues, and homelessness that includes dependent children."

?For example, the Department of Defense estimates that one in four women who serve in the military are raped or assaulted,? said Wilkewitz. ?Also, there is a shortage of safe living environments for homeless female veterans, which only perpetuates the cycle of being homeless and unemployed. There are even fewer facilities available for homeless women who have children."

?Female veterans bring great value to our country, to our families and to our workforce. It?s critical that attention be focused more strategically on immediate care when they return home, training and jobs, and housing and health care.?

About Disabled Veterans National Foundation:

The Disabled Veterans National Foundation exists to change the lives of men and women who came home wounded or sick after serving our country. A nonprofit 501c3, DVNF was founded in the fall of 2007 by six women veterans to provide disabled men and women of the military with help obtaining housing, medical care, counseling and meaningful jobs. Hm...screw it, I'll give it a go. I think I'll take an old character of mine from a similar RP and rework parts of him for this. I'll take one of the single males, please. I'll have a profile tomorrow at the latest.

EDIT: I'll wait till you have the rules and character sheet up before I start.

189-191 is where I am now (depends on the scale used.) My main goal is to be 170 or so, that'd put me at 8-10% bodyfat instead of 17 now. I'd be happy at 180, though. I don't like being hyooooge. Last winter I was like 200-205, bleh. I did gain 10lbs lean mass from when I initially lost weight. When I initially dropped weight, I was probably 17% bodyfat at 180lbs, going from a fat 210-215lbs, so now I'm 190 currently. 170 would be good, as if I decide to pursue lifting, I'd be right at the edge of the 77K weight class, that and I wanna look like the Chinese Olympic lifter Lu Xiaojun. That'd be my ideal physique.

I've changed my diet up a lot, I eat a lot more complex carbs now and less meat and fat, and it's helping me lean out gradually. For some reason, I still get bloated with pasta and bread, but like, oats and rice is fine.

Well, you should check if that's realistic. Like for me, when I started skating I was 210 or 215, and got down to 180 at around the same bodyfat as now, maybe more, maybe less. So my total lean mass back then, ie, zero bodyfat at all, would be like 145 or something. I have friends I envied for their skinniness that were my height (5'9) at like 130lbs and stuff, and I wished I was their size. Now I know it was never realistic for me to even think about being that skinny. Now due to lifting, my lean mass is 157lbs. This sorta makes me feel weird, as unlike most guys I never really wanted to be "hyoooge" and "swole" and bulky and stuff, I always wanted to be like skinny and agile. Now I know that's not in the cards.

BMI is another thing that sorta messed with me, too. Now, I'd be "overweight" at like 10% bodyfat according to BMI. So basically, get your bodyfat level checked, and see what it is, and for a girl, go for like 20%, so lean mass X 1.2, and that should be the weight you aim for.

8-10% body is pretty hard!! You would be shredded! Body builders in competitions have around 4-7% body fat. I'm around 14-15% at 207 pounds, 5'11'' tall, with a 32 inch waist. Which is above average. I was down to about 10-11% when I was boxing. I was pretty damn cut up too. Your goal of 8% might be unrealistic, depending on how hard your wiling to work. 10% is def achievable if you work your ass off though! I have a pic of me at 10-11% body fat if you want to see. I was at the point where i was working out 6 days a week. Sparring 20 3 minutes rounds with 30 second rests on a daily basis. With the sickest diet! On top of crazy amounts of exercise stacking, pyramiding, super setting. Running 7+ miles a day. You could cut the work in half though and just take steroids lol

Eh, I got my Chinese herbs, don't need roidz. I don't know if it's "all natural" or not, but if I'm boiling tree bark and roots of stuff and making tea of it, I guess that has more "natural" connotations than that. Lol I don't even use whey protein. So I take some vitamins, and use Chinese herbs, usually the whole herb made into tea.

Doing the low carb thing really f**** me up, though. Bad bad idea. I must admit I should have listened to you. That said, it does seem like I have a wheat sensitivity, like I can have a slice or two of bread or something and be relatively fine, but then a big plate of pasta, forget it. I'm sorta back on my old pre-lifting diet of "screw it, don't eat American food, that's all" and probably about 5-6oz or so of meat a day total.

As far as exercise, I usually get about an hour a day on the ice, so that's equivalent to about an hour jogging calorie-wise. Then maybe an hour or two of lifting or plyometrics every other day usually (depends on how "hot" I feel that day.)

Talking elephant: To fight loneliness, pachyderm speaks five words (+video)

Talking elephant? Yes, an Asian elephant in a South Korean zoo has a five-word Korean vocabulary, says a team of scientists. The elephant talks through his trunk.

By Sam Kim,?Associated Press / November 2, 2012

An elephant in a South Korean zoo is using his trunk to pick up not only food, but also human vocabulary.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '

An international team of scientists confirmed Friday what the Everland Zoo has been saying for years: Their 5.5-ton tusker Koshik has an unusual and possibly unprecedented talent.

The 22-year-old Asian elephant can reproduce five Korean words by tucking his trunk inside his mouth to modulate sound, the scientists said in a joint paper published online in Current Biology. They said he may have started imitating human speech because he was lonely.

Koshik can reproduce "annyeong" (hello), "anja" (sit down), "aniya" (no), "nuwo" (lie down) and "joa" (good), the paper says.

One of the researchers said there is no conclusive evidence that Koshik understands the sounds he makes, although the elephant does respond to words like "anja" and "nuwo."

Everland Zoo officials in the city of Yongin said Koshik also can imitate "ajik" (not yet), but the researchers haven't confirmed the accomplishment.

Koshik is particularly good with vowels, with a rate of similarity of 67 percent, the researchers said. For consonants he scores only 21 percent.

Researchers said the clearest scientific evidence that Koshik is deliberately imitating human speech is that the sound frequency of his words matches that of his trainers.

Vocal imitation of other species has been found in mockingbirds, parrots and mynahs. But the paper says Koshik's case represents "a wholly novel method of vocal production" because he uses his trunk to reproduce human speech.

In 1983, zoo officials in Kazakhstan reportedly claimed that a teenage elephant named Batyr could reproduce Russian to utter 20 phrases, including "Batyr is good." But there was no scientific study on the claim.

Researchers believe Koshik learned to reproduce words out of a desire to bond with his trainers after he was separated from two other elephants at age 5.

Koshik emerged as a star among animal enthusiasts and children in South Korea after Everland Zoo claimed in 2006 that he could imitate words, two years after his trainers noticed the phenomenon. His growing reputation prompted Austrian biologist Angela Stoeger-Horwath and German biophysicist Daniel Mietchen to study him in 2010, zoo officials said.

Oh Suk-hun, a South Korean veterinarian who co-authored the research paper with Stoeger-Horwath and Mietchen, said the elephant apparently started imitating human speech to win the trust of his trainers.

In April, a children's science book called "Joa Joa, Speaking Elephant" was published. The cover photo showed Koshik opening his mouth wide while raising a trunk over his trainer's head.

Researchers said Koshik was trained to obey several commands and "exposed to human speech intensively" by trainers, veterinarians and zoo visitors.

Shin Nam-sik, a veterinary professor at Seoul National University who has seen Koshik, agreed with researchers' finding that the elephant was able to mimic human speech.

"In Koshik's case, the level of intimacy between him and his trainer was the key factor that made the elephant want to sound like a human," Shin said.

Kim Jong-gab, Koshik's chief trainer, said the elephant was timid for a male when he first came to Everland Zoo, so trainers often slept in the same area with him. Kim thinks that contact helped Koshik feel closer to humans.

Kim said he has another phrase he wants to teach Koshik: "Saranghae," or "I love you."
