Climate change will make conservation even pricier

If you think saving endangered species is expensive now, just wait a few decades. Climate change will require protected areas to expand if species are to be saved, potentially doubling the cost of such conservation efforts.

That's the conclusion of three studies that estimate how habitats will be affected by the warming climate, and how much more of the planet will need to be set aside as a result.

Rebecca Shaw of the Environmental Defense Fund in San Francisco, California and colleagues studied the Nature Conservancy's Mount Hamilton project, which spans 3200 km2 of California. They focused on 11 species in the area with known climate tolerances.

They then combined the results of 16 climate models to estimate how the local climate within the project will change between now and 2100. That allowed them to determine how each species' habitat would move, grow or shrink ? and thus how much more land would need to be acquired and maintained to preserve them.

The analysis suggests that the project will need an extra 2560 km2 of land by 2050. The figure had risen to 3800 km2 by 2100. Shaw estimates the extra cost at $1.73 billion by 2050, and $2.54 billion by 2100. That is slightly more than double the cost of maintaining the project in the absence of climate change.

Costs of change

Shaw says the results won't be the same for all species, because some are more tolerant of climate change than others. "Even so, it is very likely that responses in many other kinds of habitats will be equally dramatic," she says.

Two other studies published this month back Shaw's claim. Russell Wise of Csiro Environmental Services in Canberra, Australia, and colleagues focused on the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. There are already plans to expand the protected area by 2410 km2 over the next 50 years, to help the ecosystem cope with climate change. Wise estimates this will cost at least $260 million, and possibly four times that figure.

Meanwhile Jonah Busch of Conservation International in Arlington, Virginia, and colleagues ran similar models to see how climate change up until 2080 would affect 74 plants living on Madagascar. As the climate changed, the models suggested that conservationists would need to adopt ever more expensive strategies to ensure the plants still had sufficient habitat.

"These studies show it is going to get harder and more costly to conserve nature in the future," Shaw says.

Man reunites with long-lost mother thanks to Google Earth

By Nadine Bells | Good News

An Indian boy who was separated from his family in 1986 has reunited with his mother ? thanks to Google Earth's satellite images.

BBC World Service's Robin Banerji tells the heartwarming story.

When Saroo was only 5 years old, he fell asleep in a train station. The little boy was travelling with his brother late at night ? they were working as sweepers on a train in India ? and he was exhausted. When Saroo woke up, his brother was nowhere to be found.

Saroo got on the next train, assuming his brother was on it. He wasn't. Saroo fell asleep on the train and woke up in Calcutta 14 hours later.

An illiterate 5 year old, he didn't know the name of the town he was from.

"I was absolutely scared. I didn't know where I was. I just started to look for people and ask them questions," Saroo told BBC Magazine.

Saroo had to quickly learn to fend for himself, begging on the streets until an orphanage took him in. He was soon adopted by the Brierleys, a couple from Tasmania.

"I accepted that I was lost and that I could not find my way back home, so I thought it was great that I was going to Australia."

As Saroo got older, his desire to find his birth family grew. Because he didn't know his family's town's name, he started using Google Earth to search for potential matches to his place of origin.

The search was overwhelming ? until math came into play.

"To narrow down the search, he calculated the distance the train would have travelled using the speed of Indian trains and the time he was on the train ? 14 hours. He eventually came up with a distance of 1,200km," the Telegraph reported.

He soon found the town of Khandwa: it looked like home.

Saroo decided to visit Khanwa, one childhood photograph in hand, hoping to find his mother still there.

While his childhood home was vacant, passersby helped redirect him to his mother's new home.

"She grabbed my hand and took me to her house. She could not say anything to me. I think she was as numb as I was. She had a bit of trouble grasping that her son, after 25 years, had just reappeared like a ghost," Saroo said of their unbelievable reunion.

Saroo soon learned that his brother was found dead just a month after Saroo disappeared. It was a fortune teller, who told Saroo's mother that she would see her son again, who gave the woman "a bit of energy to live on and to wait for that day to come."

Unsurprisingly, producers are interested in bringing Saroo's incredible story to the big screen.

What Makes a Good Realtor? | Rai Chertkoff Real Estate Guides

Agents Realtors

With the real estate market open to good opportunities, you have to find an effective realtor to represent you. A good realtor should have advance knowledge in tax benefits and variable values, he or she should have proven experience, integrity, market awareness and has above average communication skills. Those are the essential qualities you should be looking for in a realtor. Purchasing a home, building on raw land is too important to place in the hands of an unqualified and inexperienced realtor.

First of all, a realtor should be in good standing with the National Association of Realtors or NAR. This organization makes sure that its member realtors are equipped with educational programs and complies with the principle of ethical conduct regarding their profession. The National Association of Realtors is the governing body instrumental to the increase and implementation of the important ethical principles and conduct of the entire industry.

Aside from those mentioned above, realtors involved in the National Association of Realtors has the listing you might need if you are looking for a certain property.

The NAR provides their members with the Multiple Listing Service or MLS. The MLS provides a wide scope of listing for the realtors whether it is residential or commercial properties.

It is important for the buyers to see the difference of a realtor and an agent. The realtor, or real estate broker, refers to the agency itself. Realtors have agents working for them to find buyers for them and close the deal also. However, the realtors keep a close eye on the activities and conducts of its agents because it is their license on the line if the agent screws up a deal.

A proven realtor gives the buyer assurance that they would be making an informed choice when it comes to buying a property.

With the internet explosion, realtors are in the brink of losing their business if they do not take a step forward in terms of marketing their listings. Today, you can find properties for sale just by browsing the internet, no need for a middle man or a realtor. Successful realtors find ways to fine tune their internet strategies, marketing plans and communication programs. Virtual tours and digital photography are being used by realtors in their own website to enhance the visibility of their listings. They also post aerial photographs, tax documents, copies of deeds and even produce web logs. An effective real estate understands the importance of being on top of the market activity at all times. They should always be accessible to the buyers and sellers alike for you do not know when a critical sale would be made.

Technology does not set aside traditional marketing tools such as signs, brochures, flyers, business cards and open houses. Those marketing activities related to the real estate are still very much essential. Skilled realtors, in the meantime, do not just focus on one marketing tool but in fact, uses a combination of both the old school marketing and online or high-tech marketing very rampant now these days.

Gum disease doesn't lead to heart attack or stroke | Health X Pert ...

Despite what doctors have been telling patients for the past few years, having gum disease does not make us more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, according to the American Heart Association . Treating gum disease does not appear to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease either. Cardiologists, dentists, and infectious disease specialists reviewed more than 500 studies addressing the connection between the two diseases. The results were published Wednesday in a statement by the AHA. The connection was made years ago when experts noticed that people with gum disease tended to have more heart attacks or strokes than people in better dental health. The thinking was that the bacteria causing the infection in the gums got into the blood stream and traveled to the fatty plaques in blood vessels where they attached and helped form blood clots which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. But the experts who reviewed the numerous studies say that though people with heart disease can certainly have periodontal disease, that gum disease does not necessarily cause heart disease. People with both conditions share many of the same risk factors or engage in the same behaviors and this may be why it was thought that there was a connection. Both conditions are tied to cigarette smoking, being overweight or obese, being diabetic and having high blood pressure. There?s a lot of confusion out there,? said Peter Lockhart, D.D.S., co-chair of the statement writing group and professor and chair of oral medicine at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. ?The message sent out by some in healthcare professions that heart attack and stroke are directly linked to gum disease, can distort the facts, alarm patients and perhaps shift the focus on prevention away from well known risk factors for these diseases.? The American Dental Association agrees with the conclusions of the AHA and says in a statement: "Just because two conditions are associated with each other does not mean that one causes the other." While inflammation from gum disease can still damage blood vessels it's not actually causing heart attacks or strokes, researchers conclude. To reduce your risk for gum disease, heart attack, and stroke the advice doctors have been giving for years still holds. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly. Filed under: Dental health , Heart Tagged: Leslie Wade ? CNN Medical Producer

Apple offering free Snow Leopard update to MobileMe holdouts

mac icloud upgrade

Mama had it right -- procrastination is bad -- but mama never knew Apple. For Leopard users still clinging tightly to their MobileMe account, it looks like the path to iCloud just got a wee bit cheaper. Qualifying MobileMe holdouts are reportedly receiving email notifications that point them to a special portal; behind a registration form, folks are finding a free copy of OS X 10.6 (on DVD, no less). The goal here is to get customers to make yet another jump to Lion (an extra $29), but the idea of keeping most of that cloud functionality via iCloud is certainly enticing. As MacNN so accurately points out, it's odd that Apple's not including the $69 USB drive version of Lion, which contains the ability to boost even Leopard users to OS X 10.7. If you're one that generally skips out on reading those automated Apple emails, you might want to make an exception for this one.

Apple offering free Snow Leopard update to MobileMe holdouts originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 23:49:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
