Google Chrome Remote Desktop final released

Google launched Chrome Remote Desktop about a year ago for the Chrome web browser and Chrome OS to add remote desktop features to both systems. It enables Chrome users to remote access another computer, their own or a third party computer, through the Chrome web browser.? It can be used for tech support, say when your parents once again experience issues with their computer, or to access data on another computer that is in another physical location.

Chrome Remote Desktop has now been released as a final version by Google after a year of tweaking and improvements. The application is cross-platform and works as long as Chrome is installed on the system. Remote assistance capabilities are available for Windows, Mac and Linux, while desktop access is only available for Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.6 or newer versions of the operating systems.

To get started, install the application from the Chrome Web Store on at least one system running the Google Chrome web browser or Chrome OS. If you want to remote access your own computer systems, make sure the app is installed on all systems that you want to access this way. Note that you need to sign in to your Google account to install the app, that the app has a size of about 20 Megabytes, and that you need to give it certain rights before you can use it.

Whenever you start the app afterwards, the following screen will pop up.

chrome remote desktop app

Here you need to select whether you want to access one of your own computers where Chrome Remote Desktop is running on, or use it for remote assistance instead which is ideal if you want someone else to take a look at your computer, for instance for tech support.

The final version of Chrome Remote Desktop brings along several new features which should come in handy. This includes the ability to copy and paste between local and remote computer systems or the streaming of audio from one computer to another. The latter is currently only available on Windows systems.

Chrome Remote Desktop is an alternative to popular desktop applications like TeamViewer. It is in some regards limited though, as it requires Chrome to be installed on the computer while TeamViewer does not have that restriction.

Integrity is now the issue - Society, Politics, and the Planet ...

545 vs. 300,000,000 People
-By Charlie Reese

"Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings, out of 300 million, that are are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ...

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power.
Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!"

(AP) ? It's scratchy, lasts only 78 seconds and features the world's first recorded blooper.

The modern masses can now listen to what experts say is the oldest playable recording of an American voice and the first-ever capturing of a musical performance, thanks to digital advances that allowed the sound to be transferred from flimsy tinfoil to computer.

The recording was originally made on a Thomas Edison-invented phonograph in St. Louis in 1878.

At a time when music lovers can carry thousands of digital songs on a player the size of a pack of gum, Edison's tinfoil playback seems prehistoric. But that dinosaur opens a key window into the development of recorded sound.

"In the history of recorded sound that's still playable, this is about as far back as we can go," said John Schneiter, a trustee at the Museum of Innovation and Science, where it will be played Thursday night in the city where Edison helped found the General Electric Co.

The recording opens with a 23-second cornet solo of an unidentified song, followed by a man's voice reciting "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Old Mother Hubbard." The man laughs at two spots during the recording, including at the end, when he recites the wrong words in the second nursery rhyme.

"Look at me; I don't know the song," he says.

When the recording is played using modern technology during a presentation Thursday at a nearby theater, it likely will be the first time it has been played at a public event since it was created during an Edison phonograph demonstration held June 22, 1878, in St. Louis, museum officials said.

The recording was made on a sheet of tinfoil, 5 inches wide by 15 inches long, placed on the cylinder of the phonograph Edison invented in 1877 and began selling the following year.

A hand crank turned the cylinder under a stylus that would move up and down over the foil, recording the sound waves created by the operator's voice. The stylus would eventually tear the foil after just a few playbacks, and the person demonstrating the technology would typically tear up the tinfoil and hand the pieces out as souvenirs, according to museum curator Chris Hunter.

Popping noises heard on this recording are likely from scars left from where the foil was folded up for more than a century.

"Realistically, once you played it a couple of times, the stylus would tear through it and destroy it," he said.

Only a handful of the tinfoil recording sheets are known to known to survive, and of those, only two are playable: the Schenectady museum's and an 1880 recording owned by The Henry Ford museum in Michigan.

Hunter said he was able to determine just this week that the man's voice on the museum's 1878 tinfoil recording is believed to be that of Thomas Mason, a St. Louis newspaper political writer who also went by the pen name I.X. Peck.

Edison company records show that one of his newly invented tinfoil phonographs, serial No. 8, was sold to Mason for $95.50 in April 1878, and a search of old newspapers revealed a listing for a public phonograph program being offered by Peck on June 22, 1878, in St. Louis, the curator said.

A woman's voice says the words "Old Mother Hubbard," but her identity remains a mystery, he said. Three weeks after making the recording, Mason died of sunstroke, Hunter said.

A Connecticut woman donated the tinfoil to the Schenectady museum in 1978 for an exhibit on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Edison company that later merged with another to form GE. The woman's father had been an antiques dealer in the Midwest and counted the item among his favorites, Hunter said.

In July, Hunter brought the Edison tinfoil recording to California's Berkeley Lab, where researchers such as Carl Haber have had success in recent years restoring some of the earliest audio recordings.

Haber's projects include recovering a snippet of a folk song recorded a capella in 1860 on paper by Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, a French printer credited with inventing the earliest known sound recording device.

Haber and his team used optical scanning technology to replicate the action of the phonograph's stylus, reading the grooves in the foil and creating a 3D image, which was then analyzed by a computer program that recovered the original recorded sound.

The achievement restores a vital link in the evolution of recorded sound, Haber said. The artifact represents Edison's first step in his efforts to record sound and have the capability to play it back, even if it was just once or twice, he said.

"It really completes a technology story," Haber said. "He was on the right track from the get-go to record and play it back."

Hearty Creamy Leek & Mushroom Pies - Mouthwatering Vegan ...

Oct 24

Slide1

Crisp on the outside, moist and delicious on the inside.? These pies are going to be a staple this winter.? Because they are so easy to make, and so delicious ? and also because the requests at our table were so full of cheer and enthusiasm for making them again.? So I am sharing with you a wondrous English-influenced pie (love the Brits for this), that is so mouthwatering that this winter is going to have to be full of such delights that, like the sun, warm the heart and bring both comfort and culinary satisfaction because they are so irresistible !? I won?t say more, other than go try them ? ?if you want to be popular with family & friends.

Makes 4 portions

INGREDIENTS

500g puff pastry ? I used 1? sheets of Jus-Rol (which is vegan)

olive oil for frying

1 large leek, chopped into small pieces

1 clove garlic, finely chopped

20 mushrooms, washed and sliced

1 thick celery stick, chopped

1 cup cashew nuts ? process with 2 cups water for some minutes in your liquidizer until it resembles single cream

1 Tbsp nutritional yeast

1 tsp vegetable stock powder or cube (such as Kallo)

salt to taste

optional secret ingredient : 2 vegan sausages, pre-grilled and sliced (I used Linda McCartney)

METHOD

  1. First fry your leeks and celery in olive oil in a large saucepan for a couple of minutes or so, until slightly transparent.
  2. Then stir in the mushrooms and garlic, and lower the heat.? Keep an eye out for them by stirring every minute or so, until the mushrooms yield their juices.
  3. Next, add the remaining ingredients, except for the cashew cream (and sausages, if you?re using them).
  4. Make sure your veggies are totally cooked, then add your cream a little at a time.
  5. Keep a low heat setting, allow the filling to thicken a little, and then add the remaining cream ? again allowing it to simmer until it thickens.
  6. Taste for salt, then allow your filling to cool down.? Meanwhile go and roll out your dough on a clean surface.
  7. For this you need either 4 small oven-proof dishes (each a single portion), or one medium sized dish if you are making it as one pie. Now grease your dish (or dishes), roll out your pastry, and place the pastry in them (leaving enough dough for the lids).
  8. Lay your sausage slices at the bottom (if you?re using them), and, using a soup spoon, add in the filling on top, then cut the remaining dough to size to fit on top ? any extra pastry can be put on the surface as a decoration.? Then brush on some vegan milk of your choice.
  9. Place in a preheated 350?F (180?C) oven until golden ? ?for 20 minutes or so. Keep an eye on them ? when they turn golden, they are ready.

Feds investigate phony letters warning Florida voters they're not eligible to vote

By Michael IsikoffNBC News

The FBI and U.S. Postal Service agents are investigating bogus official-looking letters sent to voters in at least 28 Florida counties questioning their citizenship and their eligibility to vote, ?NBC News has learned.

David Couvertier, a spokesman for the FBI in Tampa, said his office opened up an investigation into the possible attempt at voter intimidation on Wednesday after receiving reports that eligible voters throughout the state have received the letters.?

"We're taking it as a serious situation," he said. "We're looking at everything from civil rights violations to election fraud -- to everything in between."

Chris Cate, a spokesman for the Florida Secretary of State's Office, told NBC News, "We believe these? letters appear to meet the standard of voter intimidation," Between 50 and 100 such letters have been reported to state officials so far, "and those are only the ones we know about. We're encouraging people to come forward."

The fake letters, which first started showing up last Friday, have been sent under the names of real Florida county election supervisors -- with some correct contact information -- informing the voters that the supervisors have received "information" about their citizenship status,? "bringing into doubt your eligibility as a registered voter."

The letters also say the voter must fill out a Voter Eligibility Form in the next 15 days -- and failure to do so will result "in the removal of your name from the voter registration rolls and you will no longer be eligible to vote."

"A non-registered voter who casts a vote in the state of Florida may be subject to arrest, imprisonment, and/or other criminal sanctions," the letters state.

Some of the letters have been received by "longtime, staunch voters who have been exercising their right to vote" for years, Couvertier said. While those people are likely to vote anyway, "Our concern is someone who might not be secure and then questions whether they should vote."

It's not clear who sent the letters, which were machine postmarked in Seattle. Couvertier said the FBI in Tampa is working with its Seattle office to track down the perpetrator.

Cate said a "significant majority have gone to Republican voters, but not exclusively. We've got Democrats who received the letters, we've got independents. We're telling everybody to be on the lookout."

2 Kentucky men acquitted of hate-crimes charges

LONDON, Ky. (AP) ? Two Kentucky men were acquitted of hate-crimes charges but found guilty of kidnapping late Wednesday in connection with an attack on a gay man.

Prosecutors had argued that Anthony Ray Jenkins and his cousin David Jason Jenkins attacked 29-year-old Kevin Pennington last year at a rural state park because of Pennington's sexual orientation ? a provision of the federal hate-crimes law that had not been previously prosecuted in the U.S.

It was not clear why jurors rejected that argument. They were whisked away immediately after delivering the verdicts and did not make any comments.

Anthony Jenkins' attorney, Willis Coffey, said after the trial that jurors didn't find Pennington's account of the events credible.

"You'd like to have an acquittal on all counts, but he's happy he was found not guilty of a hate crime," Coffey said of his client. "So am I."

Prosecutors said they would issue a statement later.

Pennington held hands with family members and let out an audible sigh when the not-guilty verdicts on the hate-crimes charges were announced. He left the courtroom without talking to news reporters.

Jimmy Jenkins, an uncle who raised Anthony Jenkins, dropped his head into his hands and cried when the cousins were found guilty on the charges of kidnapping and conspiracy to a kidnapping. They are scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 21.

Throughout the trial, the defense argued that any dispute between the Jenkinses and Pennington was over a drug deal gone sour.

Andrew Stephens, the attorney for David Jason Jenkins, argued that his client had at least 21 beers on the day of the assault and was too drunk to have formulated a plan for such an attack.

"These people who were stoned and drunk were going to form a plan? When this event took place, they were all about drugs," Stephens said.

Coffee argued that Anthony Jenkins has an IQ of roughly 75 and was merely a follower who does not hate gay people. He called the allegations "the nearest thing to nothing I have ever seen."

Coffey said Pennington pushed the idea that he was attacked for being gay to serve his own political agenda. Coffey invoked the name of President Barack Obama, who is unpopular in Kentucky and lost badly in the state four years ago.

"If the government and President Obama want to bow to the special-interest groups, that's their business, but they picked the wrong case," Coffey said.

U.S. Justice Department civil rights attorney AeJean Cha told jurors that the Jenkins cousins and two women planned to kidnap, beat and kill Pennington because of his sexual orientation.

"This is not about drugs, this is about the fact that Kevin is gay," Cha said.

Hawkins also played a tape of Pennington's 911 call after the attack. On the tape, Pennington's voice can be heard cracking as he tries to describe the attack and relay information about the Jenkinses.

"They're trying to kill me," Pennington told the 911 operator on April 4, 2011. "I didn't know what they were going to do. I think it's because I'm gay."

Complete mitochondrial genome sequences of ancient New Zealanders

    Tuesday, October 23, 2012

In a landmark study, University of Otago researchers have achieved the feat of sequencing complete mitochondrial genomes for members of what was likely to be one of the first groups of Polynesians to settle New Zealand and have revealed a surprising degree of genetic variation among these pioneering voyagers.

The Otago researchers' advance means that similar DNA detective work with samples from various modern and ancient Polynesian populations might now be able to clear up competing theories about the pathways of their great migration across the Pacific to New Zealand.

Results from the team's successful mapping of complete mitochondrial genomes of four of the Rangitane iwi (tribe) tupuna (ancestors) who were buried at a large village on Marlborough's Wairau Bar more than 700 years ago will be published online in the prestigious US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Study director Professor Lisa Matisoo-Smith explains that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is only inherited through the mother's side and can be used to trace maternal lineages and provide insights into ancient origins and migration routes.

"We found that three of the four individuals had no recent maternal ancestor in common, indicating that these pioneers were not simply from one tight-knit kin group, but instead included families that were not directly maternally related. This gives a fascinating new glimpse into the social structure of the first New Zealanders and others taking part in the final phases of the great Polynesian migration across the Pacific."

The researchers discovered that the four genomes shared two unique genetic markers found in modern Maori while also featuring several previously unidentified Polynesian genetic markers. Intriguingly, they also discovered that at least one of the settlers carried a genetic mutation associated with insulin resistance, which leads to Type 2 diabetes.

"Overall, our results indicate that there is likely to be significant mtDNA variation among New Zealand's first settlers. However, a lack of genetic diversity has previously been characterised in modern-day Maori and this was thought to reflect uniformity in the founding population.

"It may be rather that later decimation caused by European diseases was an important factor, or perhaps there is actually still much more genetic variation today that remains to be discovered. Possibly, it may have been missed due to most previous work only focusing on a small portion of the mitochondrial genome rather than complete analyses like ours."

Professor Matisoo-Smith and colleagues including ancient DNA analysis expert Dr Michael Knapp used Otago's state-of-the-art ancient DNA research facilities to apply similar techniques that other scientists recently employed to sequence the Neanderthal genome.

"We are very excited to be the first researchers to successfully sequence complete mitochondrial genomes from ancient Polynesian samples. Until the advent of next generation sequencing techniques, the highly degraded state of DNA in human remains of this age has not allowed such genomes to be sequenced," she says.

Now that the researchers have identified several unique genetic markers in New Zealand's founding population, work can begin to obtain and sequence other ancient and modern DNA samples from Pacific islands and search for these same markers.

"If such research is successful, this may help identify the specific island homelands of the initial canoes that arrived in Aotearoa/New Zealand 700 years ago," she says.

This research is the most recent output from the Wairau Bar Research Group, a collaboration between Otago researchers and Rangitane-ki-Wairau. The Otago research team is led by archaeologist Professor Richard Walter (Department of Anthropology and Archaeology), and biological anthropologists Associate Professor Hallie Buckley and Professor Matisoo-Smith (Department of Anatomy).

    Background information

First excavated over 70 years ago, the Wairau Bar site is one of the most important archaeological sites in New Zealand because of its age and the range of material found there.

It is the site of a fourteenth century village occupied by some of the first generations of people who settled New Zealand. The material excavated from the site, most of which is now cared for in the collections at Canterbury Museum, provided the first conclusive evidence that New Zealand was originally settled from East Polynesia.

This discovery was first reported to the New Zealand public in 1950 by the late Dr Roger Duff, Director of Canterbury Museum, in his book The Moahunter Period of Maori Culture. The principal evidence for his conclusions was in the artefacts found; however, the site also contained a large number of human burials.

Between 1938 and 1959 a total of 44 graves were excavated from the site and the grave contents taken to Canterbury Museum for study. For many years Marlborough Iwi (tribe), Rangitane, sought to have the remains repatriated so they could be reburied in the site and an agreement was reached with Canterbury Museum.

The reburial took place in April 2009, following earlier archaeological investigations of the site undertaken in collaboration with Rangitane.

A University of Otago-led multidisciplinary team of scientists have been analysing tooth samples recovered from the koiwi tangata (human remains) of the Rangitane iwi tupuna (ancestors) prior to their reburial. This work includes studies of the diet and health of the tupuna.

A 2009 article about aspects of the archaeological and biological anthropology research can be read here: http://www.otago.ac.nz/research/hekitenga2009/historyunearthed.html

Of the 19 burials screened for DNA preservation, four provided sufficient sequence data for inclusion in the current study. These included the remains of two young to middle-aged females, a young adult male and a young adult female.

The researchers will now proceed with discussions with Rangitane about further genetic studies based on the samples already processed.

X-ray probe spots black hole's blast

    NASA / JPL-Caltech

These are the first, focused high-energy X-ray views of the area surrounding the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, called Sagittarius A*. The three images on the right side show Sagittarius A* before, during and after an X-ray flare that was spotted in July.

    By Alan Boyle

For years, astronomers have known about the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, but these pictures from NASA's NuSTAR telescope show a rare view of the usually sleeping giant gobbling down a cosmic snack.

"We got lucky to have captured an outburst from the black hole during our observing campaign," Caltech's Fiona Harrison, the $165 million mission's principal investigator, said today in a NASA news release. "These data will help us better understand the gentle giant at the heart of our galaxy and why it sometimes flares up for a few hours and then returns to slumber."

NuSTAR, also known as the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, is an X-ray observatory that was launched in June to study high-energy phenomena such as the tumult that takes place around black holes. Sagittarius A*, which is 4 million times as massive as our sun, is one of the prime targets for observation.

Supermassive black holes like Sagittarius A* commonly form at the center of big galaxies: In fact, they may be an essential piece of the galaxy formation puzzle, and some of them can get pretty violent. Our galaxy's black hole is uncommonly quiet, however, and that's probably a good thing. Only occasionally does matter from the surrounding area fall into its grip. As that matter is sucked into the singularity, it heats up and emits a blast of radiation.

NuSTAR happened to be in the right place at the right time to observe Sagittarius A* for two days in July, along with other observatories. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory was watching for lower-energy X-rays, while the Keck Observatory on Hawaii's Mauna Kea was taking infrared images.

During the observations, a bright X-ray flash flared up. The emissions were given off by matter that was heated up to about 180 million degrees Fahrenheit (100 mllion degrees Celsius), NASA said. The high-energy readings are being compared with the images in other wavelengths to deepen astronomers' understanding of how black holes gobble up matter and grow.

"Astronomers have long speculated that the black hole's snacking should produce copious hard X-rays, but NuSTAR is the first telescope with sufficient sensitivity to actually detect them," Columbia University's Chuck Hailey, a member of the mission science team, said in today's statement.

Get ready for a gluttonous orgy
NuSTAR and other black-hole watchers are getting set to watch Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A* for short, go into full gobble mode next year: A huge cloud of dust and gas known as G2 is approaching the black hole, and when it gets close enough, gravitational forces will start pulling material in and heating it up. If July's event was a snack, G2's close encounter will be a gluttonous orgy.

Just this week, researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California released a supercomputer simulation showing how the cloud will be disrupted as it passes by Sgr A*. That simulation suggests that the close encounter will last several months, and that G2 will be totally gone in less than a decade.

Fragile et al. via College of Charleston / LLNL

This three-dimensional volume visualization spans the period 2010 to 2020, showing the cloud of dust and gas known as G2 as it approaches the Sgr A* black hole near the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

"It will just sort of break up into some sort of incoherent structure," Peter Anninos, a computational physicist at Livermore Lab, said in a news release. "Much of it will join the rest of the hot accretion disk around the black hole, or just fall and get captured by the black hole. It will lose a lot of energy, but not all of it. It will become so diffuse that it's unlikely that any remnant of the gas will continue on its orbital track."

Check out this Web page for QuickTime animations showing what scientists think will happen to the cloud, and stay tuned for updates on the dietary preferences of our galaxy's not-always-sleeping giant.

    More about black holes:

The G2 computer simulation is the subject of a paper due for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, titled "3D Moving-Mesh Simulations of Galactic Center Cloud G2." In addition to Anninos, the authors include P. Chris Fragile and Julia Wilson of the College of Charleston, as well as Stephen D. Murray of Livermore Lab.

Twilio For Education Data, Clever, Lands $3M From Kevin Rose, Mike Maples & Ashton Kutcher, Now In 2K Schools

logo-blue-reverseClever, a graduate of Y Combinator's most recent batch of startups, launched in late June to bring a bit of Twilio's vision to education. During their time at Y Combinator, the accelerator's co-founder Paul Graham challenged the team to integrate with 40 schools by the end of the program. Clever far-surpassed that goal, announcing this morning that over 2,000 K-12 schools have now adopted its technology since June. And this dramatic growth has not gone unnoticed by investors. The startup is also today that it has raised $3 million in seed funding from an impressive list of venture capital firms and angels, including SV Angel, Mike Maples of Floodgate, SoftTech VC's Jeff Clavier, Google Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Mitch Kapor, Ben Parr and Ashton Kutcher.

Suspected spa gunman pleaded for help to leave Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - The man suspected of killing three women and wounding four others in a shooting rampage at a Milwaukee-area spa where his estranged wife worked had recently posted pleas for help "to get out of Wisconsin" on his Facebook page.

Radcliffe Haughton, 45, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Azana Salon & Spa in suburban Brookfield, hours after the Sunday morning shooting.

Haughton had been placed under a restraining order and directed to surrender his firearms to authorities this month in connection with a domestic abuse case involving his wife, who worked at the spa. Police have not said whether she was among the victims.

On October 8, the same date he was ordered to stay away from his wife after police said he slashed the tires on her car, Haughton posted to his Facebook page: "Need to get out of Wisconsin, HELP ..."

The next day, he issued a second plea: "can anyone help me get out of wisconsin?"

That was the last posting to his page, which lists his marital status as "divorced."

An earlier posting, from October 3, the day before he is alleged to have slashed his wife's tires, said simply: "Shooting birds..."

"We believe this incident was domestic violence-related," Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus told a news conference on Sunday evening.

Haughton had a previous police record for domestic violence. He was cited for misdemeanor disorderly conduct, described as domestic abuse, stemming from an incident on January 8, 2011. That charge was dismissed on June 15, 2011, records show.

Authorities have not released the identities of those killed or wounded in the shooting.

A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said three of the four people wounded were in satisfactory condition, while one remained in critical condition. All four are women aged from 22 to 40.

The shooting was the second incident of gun violence at a U.S. beauty spa in a matter of days. On Thursday, a gunman opened fire at a salon in suburban Orlando, Florida, killing three women and wounding a fourth, his wife, before fleeing and committing suicide at a nearby residence. The suspect in that shooting had likewise been ordered to keep away from his spouse.

The last few months have been marked by a string of mass shootings in the United States. On September 27, a disgruntled former employee killed six people and took his own life in a shooting rampage at a Minneapolis sign company from which he had been fired.

August saw a mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater in which 12 people died and 58 were wounded, and another at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that claimed seven lives, including that of the gunman.

Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

4 Silly Sketching Exercises to Spark Your Creativity | World of ...

Creativity makes problem-solving and accomplishing projects that much easier. (Plus, it?s just really fun!)

Carla Sonheim, an illustrator, workshop instructor and author of the new book The Art of Silliness, compared neglecting your creativity to driving with a flat tire. ?You might get where you?re going, but ? oh! ? how much smoother, faster, and painless it would be with all four tires inflated.?

We also seem to operate more smoothly when we use both our serious (i.e., logical) and creative sides, she said. Many of Sonheim?s students who are more ?analytically inclined? have told her connecting to their creativity has made them feel ?whole.?

Part of being creative is being open. That?s because, according to Sonheim, ?you need to be able to consider seriously any number of options or solutions, and also be able to accept the ? fairly high ? risk of a disastrous outcome.?

Sonheim finds that she?s most creative when she lets down her guard and relinquishes some control. And it?s in this space that silliness comes into play.

Take the example of a game of charades. ?I stand in front of a group of people, waving my arms around, exaggerating my expressions, and looking slightly ridiculous. And yet in that awkwardness ? that place where I kind of ?give up,? laugh at myself, and just go with the silliness ? I?m more likely to be open to creative ways of communicating the word or phrase,? Sonheim said.

She added: ?when we allow ourselves to look silly and play, we can?t help but live in the present moment ? a nice state to be in when cultivating the openness needed for creative solutions.?

Below, Sonheim suggested four silly exercises that help you sketch your way to creativity. Remember that it doesn?t matter whether you can draw or not. The key is to open your mind, play and have fun.

    1. Hunt for blobs.

Sonheim has used this exercise for several years to create scores of playful imaginary creatures. (The above illustration is just one example). ?I?m very aware that I look silly staring at my feet in the middle of downtown Seattle drawing a sidewalk crack, but I?m willing to suffer the odd looks: Blob hunting is fun!?

    • Grab a pen and paper, and go outside.
    • Look down at the ground. You might see everything from dried leaves to cracks in the sidewalk to oil stains, she said.
    • Pick a shape ? a.k.a a blob ? that you?d like to draw. And sketch it.
    • Go back inside and turn the paper in all different directions. Then wherever you like on your blob, add eyes, fur and a tail.

2.? Draw objects with your index finger.

Pick any object, whether it?s a tree, car, lamp or couch, Sonheim said. Then close one eye. Use your index finger to ?draw? along the edges of the object. And repeat.

    3. Close your eyes while creating.

Grab a pen and piece of paper. Close your eyes, and draw an elephant. ?Think trunk, ears, tail, etc.,? she said. Next, still keeping your eyes closed, draw a bird on the elephant?s trunk. Finally, draw a circus stand ? and then open your eyes.

    4. Build a bicycle.

Again, grab a pen and piece of paper. Start drawing a bicycle ? but use only one line. Don?t lift your pen until you?ve sketched the entire bike. ?Think loops; it should LOOK like it was done with one curvy line,? Sonheim said. As you sketch swiftly, let your subconscious steer you, she said. Then when you?re done with your first drawing, do it three more times.

?What are your favorite silly ways to spark your creativity?

    ?

In-Depth Look At The Graphic Design Career [Infographic]

    graphic-design-career-numbers-header

No matter where you go on the Internet, you will see something that a graphic designer has put together. You just can?t get around it. There are more graphic designers than ever before, and the competition is fierce. Still there are more and more people who want to try out this highly creative career to see what it has to offer. There is a mystery surrounding it that I think people like. The graphic design career might seem like a laid back choice, but nothing could be farther from the truth. If your creativity is not up to par, each and every day you will find yourself under more pressure and stress than you could ever imagine. On top of that, you can be sure that all your work will be creatively criticized?every step of the way.

In order to shed some light on the graphic design career, I thought it was about time to look into all of the aspects of it, at least from a career perspective and what it has to offer if you want to make a living from it. To start, there is only one thing you will be dependent on, and that is your creativity. Without it, you will never see your predicted success and your paycheck will be minimal if even that. You have to work for your money and reputation for a long time before you have perfected your skills to the point where they will keep you creative no matter what is thrown on your desk.

By looking at an infographic called Graphic Design By Numbers (by Logo Snap), we get to peek into the bigger picture of what it means to take on a graphic design career. The first thing you should notice is that on average a graphic design career will cough up around $43,500 per year in salary. But, that is after you have gained the necessary skills to score a real job in this industry. Many people struggle for years as freelancers in order to mount up the necessary skills and portfolio to even get a shot at a graphic design career in a well paid position. But don?t let that demotivate you one single bit.

If you feel you have what it takes to take on a graphic design career, you should go for it. There are plenty of different graphic design career options to branch off into if you ever feel like designing business cards is not your thing anymore. What you should remember is that over 60% of all the people who take on a graphic design career abandon it within their first 5 years. Maybe it?s the stress and the constant battle of putting your own personal touch on the designs that over time wears on people and and makes them quit.

If you stick with your graphic design career, you can work up to a yearly salary of around $85,000. It?s not a bad salary, but there will certainly be a lot of pressure put on your shoulders in order to get there. Is it worth it? That is something you have to balance out yourself. Some people love a high octane job, while others like a more relaxed career with less pay. It?s up to everyone to choose what their life needs the most. You can be sure of one thing, if your creativity is not up to par for a graphic design career, I wouldn?t suggest taking it on in the first place.

Daddy NiVleK: Singtel's Home Without Walls ScrapBook

This is something I want to share with you guys, something that I always wanted to do too! What is that?

A SCRAPBOOK!!! And you get the chance to win a printed copy of it!

As part of Singtel's "Home Without Walls" initiative, Singtel has freshly launched a Scrapbook App to encourage Singaporeans to connect with their families and forge strong bonds with their loved ones and community. Of course, as I have mentioned earlier, there is also a concurrent contest ongoing where users can share and relate their family stories through a digital photo album.

From now till 23 October 2012, SingTel?s ?Home Without Walls? Family Scrapbook will allow Singaporeans to explore the creative applications of technology by enabling them to create a photo album of special memories by logging into SingTel?s Family Scrapbook at www.homewithoutwalls.com/scrapbook. It is essential that you are logged in as a Facebook user to use this app and you will have to authorise the app to access your Facebook.

It is really quite simple to use. Do remember to save your scrapbook so that you can continue with it. You can have up to 40+ pages!! Do it quickly! The top ten submissions will win a free printed copy of the scrapbook!

I will love doing this since taking photos of our daily life, events and happenings are just part of me and having a printed copy of these memories will be lovely.

My family album will be more on the growing up years of Jayden from 0 - 2+, a period that is both difficult as new parents and memorable because of the many "first" that we encounter.
